Episode 8 – April is National Poetry Month! The overall goal of this holiday is to spread exposure to poetry and poets. In order to celebrate, Millennial Mondays talks to local Maryland writer and artist, Rashad Norris about what it means to be a millennial writer.
Rashad started a music group called OfficialBluePrint, which you can listen to on SoundCloud. In this episode, we learn about how this group started and what it is all about.
Origin of Poetry Month
“Inspired by the successful celebrations of Black History Month (February) and Women’s History Month (March), the Academy of American Poets established National Poetry Month in 1996. Along the way we enlisted a variety of government agencies and officials, educational leaders, publishers, sponsors, poets, and arts organizations to help. National Poetry Month is a registered trademark of the Academy of American Poets.”
Rashad discusses the themes of his work and how his writing style varies per project. He tells the MiMo team about musical influences that have impacted his writing and the message he spreads. The MiMo team share their belief in the importance of writing in schools and the difference in current art exposure to the that of previous generations.
